About Canelones,
Uruguay
Canelones, Uruguay is a quiet respite just outside Montevideo. Home to the majority of Uruguay’s wine production, this small town is the epicenter of the Uruguayan wine scene and is an ideal destination for all wine lovers. Canelones’ mild, Atlantic climate isn’t unlike that of Bordeaux, France. Most of the vineyards here are boutique and family-owned with their own unique style.
Uruguay’s wine industry was started by Basque and Italian immigrants. In 1870, Basque settler Pascal Harriague introduced the Tannat grape to the region, which had roots in Madiran in southwest France. The grape thrived in Canelones due to the soil and cool yet humid climate. Harriague paved the way for Uruguay to grow even more Tannat than France.
Wine Varieties
The Tannat grape is known for its deep color, fruity profile, and elegant tannins. It’s the perfect wine to pair with carne asada, lamb, slow-cooked pork, or aged cheese. Though Tannat is the dominant vine grown here, you can find a wide range of other grape varieties in the region, as well.
